Hearth Tax Assessments 1662–1664
The Hearth Tax was an attempt to tax people according to their wealth, working on the principle that the wealthier they were the more hearth’s they would have in their home. The tax and variants were in existence for several decades but records for this parish only exist for 1662 and 1664. It was often found that people had stopped up hearths after the first taxation in order to reduce their tax
“The document here published is the Hearth Tax Assessment for Dorset ...... for Michaelmas 1664; it is based on and embodies the earlier assessment for 1662.”

WILLS, ADMINISTRATIONS & INVENTORY'S
This index contains an extracted list of persons 'of Wareham' who left wills, letters of administration or inventories to be found with the Probate Registry at Blandford Dorset, Archdeaconry Court of Dorset up to 1793. The names are extracted from indexes found in publications at the Dorset Record Office and elsewhere. Copies of these documents should be available from the Dorset Record Office. Note that this index does not cover the period from the 1790's to 1858.
Note: this is not a complete list of wills made by Wareham residents. Wills may have been proved in places other than the Archdeaconry Court of Dorset or PCC, for example the Royal Peculiar of Sarum or of Corfe. From 1858 all wills were indexed centrally and this index is widely available at Record Offices, Probate Registries and the LDS.
